Thane's should be able to become alchemists, according to:

I tried yesterday to no avail. Should be a short fix, unless I am mistaken in my source.
1. Make a viking on Midgard
2. Level to 5 and become a Thane
3. Go to alchemist master to obtain alchemy craft skill
According to attached link, thane's should indeed be able to become alchemists
