Step #1 should say instead:
> [...] get one of its eyes [...]
(I don't know if this typo was part of 1.65 Live, though.)

Unfortunately, http://camelot.allakhazam.com/quests.html?cquest=304 doesn't show the content from the journal. However, it does contain what the NPC says, and there it correctly says "its eyes".
