After killing the Blademaster who is guarding the Old Hermit I received no items.
Nevertheless, the Old Hermit was awaken and talked to me. I had no clue how to go on and gave him the plant from the lvl 7 epic and then the dialogue went on with "You explain how you came to posses this object and that you have been sent here to ask for the Old Hermit´s wisdom and aid." After that the Old Hermit stopped talking to me and nothing happened except that the quest was at Step 4, where I should return to him when I am stronger. I did not receive any items or xp as reward. I also did not receive any sidequest like "Reawekening"
1. Do the quest Cad Goddeau as Blademaster(lvl 16)
2. Kill the Blademaster after talking to harper Brac in Innis Carthaig
3. See that you receive no items or xp as reward
According to allakhazam you should receive the boots of the deft strider as reward, along with some xp
No further proof needed as of course you should receive a reward when doing the epic quests
