I was level 10 with my level 8 Hunter's Pet. When I fought Hrrgyf my Hunter's Pet got the kill and I did not receive the quest item "The Yellow Canary". I went and killed Hrrgyf a second time and this time when I got Hrrgyf low I put my Hunter's Pet on passive to make sure I got the killing blow. I then received The Yellow Canary.
1. Get the quest "Monstrous Beast" as a Hunter.
2. Kill the quest monster Hrrgyf with your Hunter's Pet. (Will not receive the quest item "The Yellow Canary")
3. Kill the quest monster Hrrgyf without your Hunter's Pet. (Will receive the quest item "The Yellow Canary")
Allow your Hunter's Pet killing Hrrgyf to trigger the quest item The Yellow Canary to appear in your inventory.
In one screenshot you will see that my Hunter's Pet got the killing blow and receive no quest item.
In the other you will see that I get the killing blow and receive the quest item.
