question about spellcraft

Hi,i have simple question.
If i imbue 99% qua 51lvl item with maximum overcharge,i need gems with 99% qua in AVERAGE (4x99 or 1xMP,2x99 and 1x98) to have 1% chance to blow up and combination 1xmp+3x99 to have zero chance to explode. Its clear to me.
With avg qua 99 gems on MP item with OC,there is zero chance to explode,what about lower combinations?

it says 2% boom if you use 99 99 99 98 on mp item.
