We never said 1500 is our max. cap It's a precaution for the initial launch date/time. We will monitor and adjust the cap accordingly.

do we need to pre-select the realm we want or will there be an instant one time switch on launch day?

Since all character will be deleted your realm should be set as unselected the first time you log in. When you create your first character it should set your realm.
