Madwind,
Finding a group even at off prime hours isn't that hard. Most people on Uthgard are extremely helpful. I too am fairly new to Uthgard and love it so far. Everyone loves Skalds. Runies are a bit more scarce and tend to always be dark. I would suggest finding a guild by randomly grouping up. Equiping a melee toon can get expensive for someone who is just building up funds. It's not exciting but you could start with a summoning based spiritmaster. They can solo like a champ and with a pac healer buddy, you're golden. Either way you should have little problems finding people to group with.

During off peak times groups can be tough to get together, which is why many lowbies run solo. Waiting on getting such and such class might take a while, so some have better success (faster xp) by solo killing yellows and chasing the camp bonus. At higher levels the leveling slows down, so there should be more people in your level range.

Skalds are good for soloing, RMs not as much unless you have power pots. Dark is an excellent group spec as it offers the best damage add in the realm and most players on Mid are some sort of melee class. You can be successful in groups and not go oop all the time by using debuffs to pull single mobs, tossing a dd or two, then wacking the mob with your staff. Rinse and repeat. With enough melees in the group the damage add acts like another dps or two.

Also consider starting your own groups by sending PMs to players. This is a great way to join groups as well. I usually get a better response that way than asking in /lfg.

Dark rm is fine but people prefer melees in group then casters reging mana 90% of the time. In my opinion its hard level one caster to 50 in midgard.
