I went with Shar and Slash and it's quite nice to play (i'm in the low 40s now).
For leveling and Braemar i got me this OTD:

No. Dex is primary, str is tertiary on ranger. A shar ranger will have more dex than str from lvl 22. And u don't lose so much damage stat with pierce. 60 + 50 = 110 for Shar, where luri and celt have 120. RIP : Ectoplasme

Everything said on this post has been very accurate. I would throw out one thing about the weapons though. On pierce the Basalt Rapier of Chaos w/ lifetap is a very nice main hand weapon. It will not do as much dmg w/ its lifetap as a dot will, but getting that -55-70 dmg on the enemy ur fighting while also getting +55-70 health on your toon is too nice to pass up. I would say go with Lurikeen if you plan on specing hybrid or sniper. You can go Celt if you dont know since Celt can do hybrid just fine as well and is a very good mele ranger. Shar should really only be used as a mele ranger. In mele (even with pierce) they will perform just fine, but the low dex makes for horrible dmg on bow as a Shar.

I would go with all dot proc's on your armor. Usually you run w/ the Fiosrach Sgath Bracer (or Dragon Tank Ring) for the 150 albalative charge and that is more then enough in Albalative for a ranger. When you are fighting classes w/ high defense (pally, warrior, armsman, etc..) those dots going off will pay HUGE dividends. I have dot's on all my armor except my chest piece (Adamantine Barrier w/ 80 value heal proc) and they have paid off more times then I can count. |

True, the ring is VERY expensive, but the Bracer is not to bad to buy. Also, you can farm it with a 5 man of high 40's if needed.
There are 2 charges that are HUGE in terms of being a difference maker to solo rangers. The 150 albalative charge and the high end s/c charge from the Body Neck or Akars Barrier. I would also put in the Bracer of Winds Haste Charge, but in order to save money you can craft a 17% charge and put it on ur boots or gloves in place of it. You could also use a s/c barrel, but its pretty big difference in the hp's and dmg added from the higher end S/C. Things needed to perform at a high level solo as a ranger: #1: 150 alblatvive charge #2: High end Strength Con charge or Barrel if you cant afford it. #3: 17% haste charge from Bracer of Winds or Crafted Charge #4: Endurance and Heal Barrels If you have all of the above you will do just fine solo as a ranger as long as you have a good idea on how to play your class. |

Slash will do 20% more damage to SBs and Hunters, and 10% more damage to Infiltrators than thrust due to resist tables. Slash receives the full benefit from the Aug Strength RA, where as thrust receives only 1/2 benefit. A Shar Ranger with +15 starting strength could reach 287 strength with str/con charge, str buff, and Aug Strength III if I've done my math correctly. I doubt its possible for a thrust-spec Ranger to have such a beefy damage stat. edit: maths correctly
