I could use some suggestions on leveling up a ranger. I've never played the class before.

The old school way of thinking for a scout was keeping bow equal to level, putting the rest in shield and damage.

What about a ranger? So far I've been keeping bow and Pathfinding high and dumping spare points into pierce...however I like the celtic dual line better (note I am only level 9 but will be i30 here soon).

It is still a challenge soloing blues with miss rates and poor gear. Yellows at this level are a no way.

My ranger is 12, and I can solo yellows no issue. Sometimes an orange, if 2 of 3 arrows land, if 2 miss I run.
Get yourself a decent bow, spend the money in decent arrows. It makes a huge difference that I figured out early on.
Get as far away as you can to be in range, launch Crit shot, then follow up with 2 regular shots, yellows should be so close to dead you can melee them down in a few hits.

Gear is extremely important to a Ranger, keep your armor within a few levels, keep your bow yellow or above with the best qua. you can get. Purchase nice arrows, keep different types in your quiver and use the ones with bonus against the mobs you are hunting.
Right now I keep bow at level, and pathfinding a tad above 3/4 of level, and remainder in pierce/CD. I played a ranger on live, and I solod pretty much 1-40.(I think I only got to level 43 before I quit game at the time)

If you have a main character to fund your ranger with crafted armor and what not, or one that can farm dungeons for drops and supply arrows, ranger is cakewalk. If you don't keep your gear up(green/gray armor, merchant purchased bow) you will have a very tough time.

Thanks for the suggestion, I admit my gear is crap. I didn't think NPC bows would be any better than my green level 5 awarded training bow. Money is a concern. I can't afford the best arrows. Is there a quiver feature in Uthgard? I didn't see it.

Any spec suggestions?

With the addition of L30 coming, I would suggest rolling a few rangers, spec each one different ways that you want, test them out and see what you prefer. At 30 you should be able to get a general idea of how you want to spec when Uthgard goes live, and yes there is a quiver feature, if I recall its in the interface options.
