I just wanted to people's opinions on Celtic Spear vs Large Weapons, and the 50 CS/LW/50 Shield/28 Parry/Weapon spec vs 50/42/39.

Which is the best spec?

50/50/28 since parry is pretty useless unless you want to solo. CS for defense for its awesome backsnare which is something LW doesn't have. People playing Heros have told me LW is better if you wanna dish out damage but since there's no celerity on hib a bm or vw is more viable option.

I agree with Maidirion, plus with Celtic Spear you will do thrust damage to which the most targets are vulnerable or neutral. I would go 50 CS 50 Shield 25 Weapon 14 Parry because there will not be much difference in damage between 28 Weapon and 25 Weapon but the parry will be useful.

CS > LW

I would like to add that you should chose Firbolg race with +15 strength. This way you will maximize your weapon skill and there wont be blocked / evaded / parried that much which is especially important vs Infis/SBs and Paladins.

50 LW 42 shield 39 spear is my personal best spec for a versatile hero.


Of course if you are planning to fully focus on defending, 50 shield 50 spear rest parry would be a nice choice in combination with some dashing defense at RR.

well... objectively you have 3 choices.

full defensive:

50 parry, 50 shield, 28 1h.


balanced:
50LW/CD, 50 shield, 25 1h, 14 parry.
or
50 LW/CD, 42 Shield, 29 1h, 26 parry.
something around those values.



fully offensive (and i mean that)

50 LW, 50 CS, 28 parry.



now i know i will get "the look" for that last one, but think about it.

the main reason you spec shield as an offensive class is for the slam.

now personally i consider shield for the crowdcontrol redundant, if you use LW, since you got a stun there anyway. basicly on your anytimer.
while CS has the advantage of thrust damage, it also features a backsnare, which is vital to keep mids from running away all the time.
aint got no snare, aint got no target to hit.

now, i sadly specced my hero balanced with cs and shield.
and now im basicly forced to play defensiv in rvr groups.

so if you just want to go for maximum damage, go 50 cs and 50 lw.
that means you have all three damages types at your disposal and you always will have the highest damage possible.
and you cant be put on defense.

i played around with that idea for a while. i prefer versatility, so i doubt i would be happy with a full out offensiv skillset, but someone might be interested :)

after all, that direction works for bms too with weapon/cd.
so it should work even better for heros :)

and as RAs for that, det 5, mop4, aug str4, lw1/2.
put that ona +15 firb hero and your basicly set for carnage with 8l5 - 8l8. and maxed with 11l6.

Does the Shield spec line count as a mundane spec line, which caps at 50 (i.e. you will not have a higher block rate if you are 34+16 shield than if you are 50+0 shield) or is it like Celtic Dual, which caps at around 111?

Also, if you fight defensively can you use guard + engage to block attacks from multiple enemies or will it focus on blocking attacks from just one?

you can only enage one target and it breaks once your engaged target gets attacked.
while engaging you still block additional attackers normaly.
afaik engange only grants the block bonus on enemies that directyl attack you, engaging the enemy that attacks whoever your guarding shouldnt have any effect.

and there is a noticable difference between 42+13 and 50+13 shield.

RA ideas for a defensive hero? Replacing 50 shield with 42 shield + MoB vs keeping 50 Shield, sacrificing abit of spec & getting diff RA's?

(edit: tested engage & it definately works when blocking for a friend against at least one enemy) )

Det 4, lw 1, Mob 3-4, Dashing Defense (if it fits the group playstyle)

You definately want to have at least one weaponline maxed and you definately want to have det 5 at least..
