You are starting in the "starter guild" of Midgard. First, you should check out the favourite class you want to pick. As a starter tanks are easier to play, on the other hand casters are playable without any good gear except of the staff.

I would recommend a Berserk, Savage, Warrior or Skald. These are 4 of the 5 tanks of this realm. For detailed information about the abilities and skills check out http://daoc.catacombs.com and the charplaner 2.

Thane is very easy to play aswell, very strong in 1vs1, but not desired in groups later on, because they are only good in small groups and get outperformed by warriors savages or berserkers easily.
