My question is why everyone seems so negative towards thanes on this server. Are there problems with some of their abilities/spells? Are there other classes better suited to do certain rolls in rvr groups? Or are people just being picky about the types of characters they use in their groups?

Thanes are Hybrids.

Means lower hits than other real tanks, slightly lower dmg and most important no stoic and not even det soon.

beyond being a hybrid thanes do work very well. their spells are effective when used properly. they are not popular in 8 man but are very strong farming characters and one of the better solo melee classes in 1v1 pvp. in then end, however, a warrior will always be picked first in 8 man because of stoicism/det combination.

static tempest is bugged for thanes, the only ra that would make them partly useful in 8vs8 grps

Even though a thane doesn't have stoicism I find that not really major flaw and if you run around in BG's (haven't been in Emain yet) that will never be the problem to get in a group.
What does make grouping hard for a Thane is that they carry the mark of being big CC breakers (pbae instant).

Otherwise Thanes are in my opnion are nearly as strong as warriors in melee, but with way with more utility overall. Single instant to rupt the bard/sorc of the on coming inc & ae hammer for getting pets of your seers.

And with Old RA's they'll loose their det & their spot in tank groups, but I think might work perfect in caster groups with bubble being broken & the always helpfull 9sec shield stun + the ability to assist nuke on a target.

And if the static tempest ability get fixed they'll even get more usefullness in a castergroup.

U can't rly compare bg situation with endgame rvr. Fact is that in emain u can only solo with a thane, u'd kick ass solo though :p

Shame they are gonna lose all that with OF RAs, together with what small groupability they have atm.

Poor Thanes who only are able to use woc 3...

woc3 is totally crap
if it is down you have no chance anymore
better spec purge3 moblock3 and moparry3

If you think everyone is negative towards Thanes on this server, then you should've seen Live. Thanes (just like Wardens) have higher damage then they should here, which has made classes that were the laughing stock of DAoC since launch (damage-wise) pretty formidable opponents. As for OF RAs - solo potential will go up and group potential will go down, and that's about it.

I didn't compare them, furthermore I made it clear that I was only speaking in BG terms for the first part.

HOWEVER I don't think that the players in Emain will have any other opnion about the thanes as they have in BG's, cause every time I suggest to take a thane instead of a warrior I get shot down (even high RR thanes are hardly ever welcome).

Cindai (the real Cindai) is a really good thane but maybe also the only one who was always welcome in a RvR grp.
Anyway he understood how to play that char

thanes aren't really that useless. maybe they dont fit in the current pacheal augheal sham zerk zerk war rm skald setup that everyone in mid loves to run but that can be said for any class not in that list.

they are insanely fun to play, great farmers, and good for other stuff like keep raid and small man or zerg rvr. not everything in this game is about 8v8. i play my sisters rr4 thane quite a bit, and i always have an enjoyable time somehow ^^

rolling a thane and wanting to join 8 mans is like going to school to be a dentist and applying to be a heart surgeon. if you wanted to do heart surgery, roll a heart surgeon. i dont think the OFRA setups will change much, maybe replace the skald with another rm would be a nice tweak. pick from that list for 8 man ^^
