My question is, do Mercs swap out their weapons for shield abilities then back to dual wield, or are the expected to do so? It has been so long since I have played in any high end rvr, and I can't remember if Mercs were one of the classes known for doing this.

The reason I ask is because I'm thinking about making my fighter into a Merc, but if I will be required to shield swap then I may not be one of the best people for the class....

It's good to be able to slam your target in a split assist situation or even in a normal assist. So yeah, swapping shield is nice towards utility.

Well i can only speak for BMs.

It's nice to have slam, but it won't matter in terms of finding groups.

I like having slam to be able to play def if needed, but for dmg 50/50 BMs or pierce/blades bms are also common.

I got merce, shield spec is usefull for slam, but you should know you won'0t deal same damage of 50/50, but you will do same damage on high rr when you will cap your slash and DW spec high. So Merce Shield>Normal Merce only at high rr.

Actually, to cap damage you only need to cap composite weapon skill at 51. That's doable at low RRs also. :)

I just repseced to get slam. So I got the following spec now:
42 Shield - For slam
36 Slash - To get 51 weapon with RR5
50 DW - For the damage and styles
20 Parry - Rest with autotrain until 48.

The only question I have is, if there is still the bug which was on live, that the level 50 DW style is based on your basic weapon skill and not on DW. If not, there is no single reason not to go 42 shield.

You don't cap damage at 51 spec.

If you just use DW styles, you need only 51 in your basic weapon skill to get the smallest variance. Your damage and weaponskill is calculated only by the DW skill (and stength, weapon speed and so on of course)

There's no reason to use any other style than DW since you have every possible positionals in that line. Unless you like to spam amethyst slash like some RR11 :D
I am assuming direct control.

Damage isnt capped at 51 composite Specc as far is i remember!

The only thing which was capped at 51 Composite was the Chance to penetrate Targets Defense Abilitys, which is lolz in 8vs8 becouze ur first Target isnt the Hero/Warrior anyway.

This Freeshard Shield/DW specc came out on I50 Servers Duel Chars first, then ppl continued to use it also in 8vs8 Situations.

The Shild / DW Spec was also common on live Servers.
