So my merc was my first Uth toon and he is sitting at 49 right now so I decided to give him a cap all template. I AT leveling with crush.
Anyone with a lot of merc experience can give advice on slash vs crush vs thrust? I am a half-ogre. Thanks. Last edited by svperstar on Apr 29, 2013 06:12, edited 1 time in total.

That is a thread about leveling a merc and tasks.
I am looking for opinions on end game rvr for a merc using the best items in the game for Crush vs Slash vs Thrust. Thanks tho.

well for grp rvr
slash= +10% damage vs hib supporters (scale-armor) +10% vs mid-zerker (studded) thrust= +10% vs everything else in a mid-grp crush= +10% vs bards n bm's (reinforced-armor) since my HO merc is normally clubbing on supporters, i chose splitspec slash/thrust. so i do vs all classes extra damage except bards and blademaster, therefore only neutral damage but no penality damage. |

Do you switch up weapons for different inc? I have Sword of Sorrow so why I was leaning toward slash.

not on every inc, for every target. and going for an all cap template on merc is probably amongst the easiest templates and can be achieved with a 99% and all df items (if u dont want to cap parry).
slash/thrust splitspec is the way to go, although i am still not sure if for halfogres the weaponskill penalty while switching to thrust is compensated by the additional damage. there is another thread here about it. but 50dw/42s/30s/30s is a good spec and works with every rr, no need to be rr11 ![]() besides that, i still dont get the obsession with those 4.2 slashers and stuff. even with a saracene, yellow d/q, red haste and a 3.9 main and 2.4 off you dont hit swingspeed cap. and especially on uthgard u really want to get close to it. ![]() |

i used crafted weapons, cause i can easily switch out a 4.0 slash weapon with a 3.3 as mainhand and so on.
btw i made myself a +11 all melee, so i can easily respec and go full crush or whatever if i feel so |

ye but that is expensive, it is way cheaper to just put +6 and +5 skill on the weapons you use. still able to cap everything with 99% and df jewelry. no need for expensive +all melee skill items. ![]() |

i used this cheap taj-chain torso with +3 or +4 all melee, used some +1 all melee on armor and +damagetype on mainweapon, i did not touch the offhand cause swapping both at the beginning takes to long.

Well, it gives a little more dps to use a 4.2 in main hand instead of a 3.9. ![]() RIP : Ectoplasme

why would a 4.2 weapon give more damage per second than a quicker weapon? after all, quicker weapons will give you more dps. style dmg stays the same, so more hits in the same time = more style dmg overall. furthermore, you hit less swings into a bladeturn, hence also more dps. 4.2 weapons only do more dps if u just hit once. ![]() |

Because it is used on a dual wielder. You're right when you say that dps of a style is constant, since the style bonus damage is based on real swing speed. BUT for dual wielder, it's based only on the main hand "theorical" swing speed, without taking into account the increase of speed you get when both hand swing. Let's try an example. If damage bonus is +150 with the 3.9 in main hand, then with a 4.2 it will become (4.2*150/3.9)~161 for a 4.2 (same dps according to main hand). This bonus is realistic with common style, and with something like 40% speed bonus on swing speed (~200 quickness + casted haste). Well i hope it's realistic, lack of rvr experience as a merc ![]() Since real swing speed is the average of both hand, dps of style is 150 / (0.4*(3.9+2.4)/2) ~ 119 161 / (0.4*(4.2+2.4)/2) ~ 122 So about 3% gain on dps from style, which is about 30% of damage, so +1% dps. As i said, it's a little gain. ![]() RIP : Ectoplasme

and hitting into bladeturn how much more often in a 5 minute fight or having a hard time vs guard? or if haste fades again in a long fight and you are d/q sheared and d/q debuffed by the eld / haste debuffed by the healer, it is already a pain with the fastest main/offhands to even get through bt/guard. eventually, it will decrease your dps by alot more than 1% you would gain.

well since we had much good input here
the best way to play is... how you would like to play? there are everywhere pro and cons about damagetypes, but atleast you need to like it. a full crush merc isnÄt a "noob" or whatever in my eyes. its only a other player with a different playstyle, thats fine. as long as you dont spec something weird like tri-spec or 50shield 50parry, no one will judge you for playing your own style ![]() |
