As a thane you will have sort of a tough time joining dragon raids, but for any other raid, you can pretty much participate with no problem. Also, you can organize raids of your own and be the shield tank or one of the shield tanks for that raid. Just get mob3/4 and you're fine. Your template will be expensive, but at least you will not have to pay around 100p for a str/con charge. Keep in mind thane is a solo toon, so you will probably have no problem finding leveling groups or groups in battlegrounds, but when it comes to lvl 50 rvr, you are pretty much doomed to solo. I honestly don't know how appealing that is to you, I know some players enjoy it. Charges, pots, constant rearranging of your vaults and so on, so your pots would always be available, and trust me you need all that if you want to be competitive in solo rvr...those are the reasons I play my hunter and my solo skald only when I'm bored :).

You should also level up a craft to be able to salvage stuff. You wanna get an alchemist with like 780 skill or so, which is couple hundred gold and done pretty fast, and you wanna get a salvager. I suggest your thane to be the salvager, cause you will be able to repair your own gear any time you want. Everyone will suggest tailoring, but personally I'd go for AC, it's more expensive to level, but you can get to legendary just making studded gloves/boots and you'll be able to repair + craft some MP studded you can always sell. People are constantly re-rolling zerks/hunters/savages and looking for gear. Well anyway, if you don't want to spend as much money, just make a tailor. You can eventually level an AC and you will be able to make chain/studded, maybe save some money for your temp(cause MP chain prices are exaggerated) and sell some 99% chain or extra MP's.

Anyhow, I do suggest you making a raid toon like healer or shaman, and you can make a cheap template for them, then finance your thane. Still, if you decide to focus on one character, it's not as bad as people say. There are spots where you can farm salvage and money and finance yourself, even with a caster, and thane can farm solo very effectively. All you need is a dexqui charge and a haste pot, and you're good. Hell, you can even get one of the old dexqui charges(value 63) on kobil's rings, that's like 100 gold, and it will be fine for PvE. Takes some time to farm this way, but you can do it while at work/cooking/doing whatever and you can start doing it as soon as you log, no need to wait for a raid to form, spam for other people you need etc.

If you like melee Chars just go for a skald. There are multipe Skalde needed at Dragon and Legion Raids and in taj2/Temple you need them too.

As long as you specced AotG2. And if you dont want to play it after you got some Money. Cap it out of thid or at least 4l0 then spec AotG3 and you are even more welcome to join Raids.

And btw you really gotta keep in mind that you wont have any grp fun if you roll a thane. Everyone who builds a grp will most likely take a Warrior with high Det and a large Shield over a thane.

Not to mention stoicism and group friendly RA's like dashing defense and soldier's barricade on a bit higher RR. I agree, skald is nice but it's really useless unless high rr and good player(against decent enemies anyway). There are only few people who can play skald well, don't let the RR fool you. I've seen highest rr skalds on server assisting a zerker on theurg using a ****** dragonstorm(5.8 dot proc) while theurg had guarder and skald was combat speed debuffed, while the skald's assigned targets were free. Many rr8-9 skalds didn't even own a 1h weapon till rr8+.

And yes, black metal indeed is glorious xD.

I don't know either of you, but I like you already.

Back to the original topic, I can only agree to the claim that a character class that's useful both in RvR and raid groups is probably the best way forward. It'll get you acquainted to a lot of people (more than camping AMG on a thane would), you'll make all the plats you require and, in case you DO roll a skald (and aren't absolutely awful at playing it) you can viably run around on your own in the frontiers.
