For group, sword is an epic fail. For solo it can work, but I think axe is better. Still, you will be at a disadvantage. If you really wanna play a sword character, make a warrior. Go for 50 sword, 29 hammer, rest shield(autotrain your weapons if possible). You will still have backsnare but you will have your sword. On skald it's lame. Drains too much endo, and your shouts and songs drain endo as well so you will have serious problems, in group or solo rvr. There is a skald on this server that was telling me how he can 3 shot a caster with his 2h sword on skald. You will never ever be able to do this against any normal group, and it's not your job as a skald to chase casters and try to KILL them instantly. Also, I know for a fact this guy plays late night US time, when other realms bring out weird setups which don't work and pug up with anyone, hence his "success". Sadly, weapon lines are not balanced on midgard but without the backsnare you are pretty much useless as a skald.

"Pro rvr grps" won't accept u, because swordspec is a visible sign of gimpness :). In solo slash dmg type also gimps u, but atleast u will look cool when u die!

yea what everybody else has said... doesn't work on a skald.
also hammer has a very low end usage on the anytimer which you need when all your shouts and chants take endo. The back snare is a must have and the 2 second parry stun is a nice bonus. If you plan on soloing crush has a bonus against most classes you'll face too.
if you want to play sword I'd suggest a hunter.

yes same with any midgard melee class that has access to hammer spec.
its not like you can't go with sword, its just that hammer is so much better.
