Paladin vs. Friar

Hey guys. I'm willing to start playing again on Uthgard. I need some help in picking a class to play. I'm interested in Friar or a Pally, but don't really know much about them except the short description of the class. What are the Pros and Cons of each class ? Which one is more desired ?
Also, have in mind that this will be my main char, and that i'm pretty much a newbie in this game, having very limited experience with Theurg and Mentalist. |

I'm a level 32 Paladin here on Uthgard, about two months playing on Uthgard. When I did my asking around and research (and using my knowledge of classes from years ago and when I was on Mythic server), between a Friar and Paladin it seems that Paladins are more universally accepted and needed in both PvE and RvR. Both can also solo in PvE well (and probably RvR), but in RvR most groups tend to shun the Friar I hear because they aren't particularly great at anything specifically and so aren't needed for a specific role. For example Clerics heal better than a friar does and melee classes can damage more than a Friar does. But a well played Friar will probably earn a reputation and can buck that trend with some work I imagine. Paladins are needed specifically for their Endurance chant, they eventually have the ability to resurrect (level 30 chants which I recently got!), and being plate armor wearers and the ability to specialize into shield, they can become great tanks and in RvR can do well as bodyguards, like for a healer for example. You could also consider a more offensive Paladin and wield a two handed weapon for an increase in damage, too.
On the Mythic servers I enjoyed both classes but I used my Paladin far more, especially in RvR, than my Friar. The real benefit I found on my Friar was in PvE when I could group with anyone and contribute positively, being able to do melee damage, buff, and heal. Solo was a breeze, even more so than my Paladin was, but both classes should be able to find groups pretty easily. So to me the main difference is how important group RvR is to you because being a Paladin will certainly be easier to get into RvR groups than a Friar at least until you've managed to create a good reputation for yourself. So far I've enjoyed my Paladin here on Uthgard and can't imagine playing a different class. ![]() Oh and I forgot to mention too, being your first character (like me!), the Friar has lower costs to equip than the Paladin does but I've found it to not be too difficult to do here as a Paladin, and people who will usually help out a new player and donate items or gold to them I've seen, and I have received some help like that. Hope that helps! |

As a friar you will nearly never get invite to rvr fullgroups, just a heads up. He's great in solo and smallman, and sought in PvE for resists but not really in rvr fg.

I agree with dubren. I personally would roll a friar but I just think they are sexy. For solo action and cost = friar. Endgame and group invites = pally. Granted when leveling and in BG's a friar is more than welcome.
What you could do is roll each and get to 20. Play your pally when you can get groups and when there is BG action. When it is dead, log on the friar. |

To counter some of the responses, I think friars have a place in 8mans, they do decent damage if they run the celerity charges of Moran the Mighty's bracer. With a decent hybrid spec, they can heal in a pinch and they provide resist buffs vs. cold and heat.
That last bit is always sorta forgotten for the sake of the argument. I have to forego a source, but Hib and Mid nukes are largely based off those resists. There were plenty of grps on alb running: merc/merc or friar/cleric/cleric or friar/sorc/pala/theurg or friar/mins |

Paladins are not needed in RVR. Whether they're viable or not is a debate nobody's willing to start again but don't go and say they're needed.

Nice digging. I think so as well. Well played friar is pretty good in a 8 man. you got a healer that nobody will attack, extra buffs for all pets and resis. Btw you sure this braces exist this patch level? Hope GMs are fine with what they have stated, that they are fine with just 80 people (300ppl was Trishin Statement long time ago) playing the game under their vision.
Its important to leave this server running doesn't matter how low the numbers will be. The other servers can fail but Uthgard still will be there, thats Uthgards only chance. Edit 19/09/21: Well Uthgards chance has come. |

You will have such an easier time leveling as a Paladin. If you find the right Alliance or guild - you will have groups many levels above you inviting you simply for your endurance Regen.
PvP might be a bit spotty without Determination and the low range on the chant, but will be more sought after than a Friar. Satanic Panic - Cleric

I'm paly.
respect full pve, this classe is useless in pvp. Too short range for endo, no determination, the lesser dealer versus merco, arms or reaver, The paladin in live server is a nice classe with lot of usefull things ( celerity, bonus toa, master level ) but here...it's just a good blockbot in pve. Friar is more interessting to group for pvp. /xping merc. |

I would choose friar over pally. Don't have experience on either class, but friar does seem like a lot more fun. Also, I think friar will have a better time finding a group in rvr and with a good hybrid spec - will be a great asset to a group if played right.

find a good guild and you can roll anything and rvr in it, too many people say 8v8 optimal groups must be classes xyz. The problem is that by limiting your groups to the same classes as everyone else makes your group weak easily countered. Friars bring resists to a group and a paladin brings resist chants if you dont have a friar. Ok they bring endurance and it has a short range but i dont see people not running with one even with the reduced range. Infact every group i see has a paladin in it.

Optimal means efficiency. Thats what everyone is talking about. Of cause everything can be played, but it won't be efficient, no matter what. ![]() Friar is not efficient for 8x8. I would take one with me, but I know no other class that I could replace, therefore I won't. Friar can't replace a Cleric, especially because he gets no Spreadheal / BOF / Instants. In a normal 8x8 fight, the Clerics (positioned well) will be the last one getting steamrolled, so Evade is quite no argument. Due to missing Determination (and the fact that you should replace a cleric, therefore heal) going into melee and ("doing damage" with 20-30 staff)) wouldn't make that much sense anyway. Without Determination, an offensive role doesn't really make sense anyway. Friar is a beast in PvE, helps alot in Raids (especially Dragon) and may be viable for Zerg-Fights, Keep-Raids/Defs or small mans, but no matter what in 8x8. Not because Friar is a bad class, but Albion 8x8 Setups are "forced" to achieve some kind of basic utility to be competetive. 2x Cleric, 1x Sorc (Mind), 1x Minstrel are a must have. Theurg + Pala (or Pots) for tanky Setups and Caba (NS + Desease) in quite ever setup. Talking about Pala in 8x8. For me, a good 44 thrust Pala is one of the best Peeler you can get. Endurance is essential, the only compensation are pots. Resist Chant is nice, Revive is great (Pala doesn't need mana anyway). Pala as a Peel/Endu-bot in a defensive position , with 1-2 good demezzer in group and communication (intercept root break), is definitly viable in 8x8! |

Sadly on this patchstate, Friars are NOT viable in RvR 8v8. They are decent in smallman and 8 PVE, and ok in solo PVE.
Why? - 24% Heat and Cold Resistances are nice on paper, BUT: For which reason, if you add grp metas to your paper? Mids are running tanksetups and Hibs are running debuff teams. The Resistances are worth nothing. - Friar has no heal on this patch. A decent single heal, which gets countered by Nearsight completly. *but cleric!!!*, no, cleric has spreadheal against Nearsight - Friar does nearly no damage, has NO styles with utility (only a low sidestyle snare, no backstyles, no anytimers). In addition, they have no DET or anything, they are just useless offensive. Defensive they are bad either because no good peel options. - Which position should a Friar replace? A Cleric? ROFL, joke. BOF is much too strong to replace it. No spreadheal means nearsight = bad game. Take out the Sorc? Theurg? Caba? (Off-)Tanks? NO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paladin: - Needed in every "usual" PvE group (only the petpull and aoe dot PvE dont need a Paladin) - "good" in RvR. (with 44 thrust and the loooooooong weapon snare / peel) Wait, did he say GOOD in RvR? Yes, hes not a god, but hes good, if you play him right in the right set up. People just have to learn one or two things and may change their mind. But, but... Oh god cata model is horrible ![]() |

sorry, but pala and friar are in the same boat. All negative points counts for both. 1k endu range really kills the pala. any merc/arms will get the spot. Hope GMs are fine with what they have stated, that they are fine with just 80 people (300ppl was Trishin Statement long time ago) playing the game under their vision.
